ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – A new polling from the University of Georgia shows a majority of those surveyed want legal sports betting in Georgia, and lawmakers have made multiple attempts to get it to the voters.
A group of senators have proposed a resolution to lift gaming prohibition from the Georgia Constitution.
If and when voted on by Georgians, lawmakers would have to enable legislation to allow casinos, gambling, and sports betting.
If this measure were to pass money generated would roughly be in the billions for taxes. Senator Carden Summers of Cordele wants the money to go back to every county in Georgia evenly.
“Let’s just say we wind up with 4 or 5 casinos in Georgia. Where do you think they will be? Well, I can tell you they’ll be in Fulton County, Cobb County, maybe in DeKalb County, one down there by the racetracks in Henry County, and probably something up around Savannah. So, that’s where you’ll have casinos. If we don’t do it the way I have it set up those counties will reap all of the benefits of what comes in and the rest of the counties in Georgia absolutely reap nothing off what’s out there.” said Summers. “But people deserve the right to vote and if they vote to do this, we want to put it in the right context and frame it where we all share in the proceeds of what comes out of it.”
Under the resolution, $7 billion will be set up with the difference of the money going to the general fund. Summers says he’d like to see that money go towards rural healthcare, and county commissioners use it to reduce taxes and various other things.
