With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad announcement approaching, Team India has received a major boost. Reports suggest that star pacer Mohammed Shami, who was previously left out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to fitness issues, is likely to make a return. According to a report by ‘Cricbuzz,’ selectors are preparing to include Shami in the upcoming home ODI series against England and the subsequent Champions Trophy.
The National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical team in Bengaluru has reportedly given Shami the fitness clearance, paving the way for his return to international cricket. However, it is unlikely that he will be selected for the T20 series against England. Following ankle surgery, Shami made a comeback in domestic cricket, representing Bengal and performing reasonably well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shami last played international cricket during the 2023 ODI World Cup. After sustaining an ankle injury, he underwent surgery in London and focused on regaining fitness. While there were initial expectations of his inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, he was sidelined at the last moment due to incomplete recovery.
Meanwhile, India and England are set to face off in a five-match T20 series followed by a three-match ODI series starting January 22. The ODI matches are scheduled for February 6, 9, and 12.
