Monday evening’s game between the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies has been delayed after a fan suffered a medical emergency at FedEx Forum. Players from both teams were sent back to the locker room just before tip off as medical personnel rushed to the attention of the fan, who had passed out.
The person was given CPR while still on the court as the situation appeared to be extremely serious in nature. Local reporter Matt Infield, who was in the arena courtside, posted on X that it also appeared that the medical staff attempted to shock the person’s heart back.
The man was later taken out of the arena on a stretcher and we can only hope for the best as he receives further assistance. Infield later reported that both teams had returned to the court and the game is expected to tip off around 7:51 p.m. ET.
The Spurs (21-25) currently find themselves two games out of 10th place and the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. They’ll take on a Grizzlies (33-16) team that gets back Ja Morant after he missed the past two games with injury.
Thankfully, it was later reported that the fan was still alive and his pulse was strong. Hopefully now he and his family and friends can be at ease as he moves forward in his recovery from the situation.
As a gambling ring is being investigated for its role in NBA games, college basketball has reportedly been brought into the mix.
Per David Purdum of ESPN, three college basketball programs — Eastern Michigan, Mississippi Valley State, and North Carolina A&T — were bet against by sportsbooks in the ring. Purdum did reach out to all of them for comment but either did not provide one or did not get back to him.
Purdum reports in the case of Eastern Michigan and North Carolina A&T, both were flagged for suspicious activity by “betting integrity monitors” for wagers regarding first-half spreads.
Looking at Eastern Michigan, games against Wright State and Central Michigan this season. In both cases, the Eagles went into the locker room behind. They came back to beat Wright State but had no such luck against their in-conference foe.
Just one game was mentioned by Purdum for North Carolina A&T, occurring not too long ago. Jan. 9 against Deleware, the first-half line moved up to Deleware -3.5 from -2 ahead of tip while the full-game line remained at -4. The Fightin’ Blue Hens would go on to cover that spread, leading by six at the half.
