MANDAN, N.D. (KFYR) – The Mandan Braves have scored 82 points in their first two games, that’s pretty good. A big part of that offensive output has been senior wide receiver Jensen Schulz.
“He makes good plays in the open field, makes people miss, his bounce, he had a play against Williston where we thought he was going to be down for maybe a short gain, he pops up, uses his hand to balance himself and then he gets up and has a 25-yard gain out of the thing,” said Todd Sheldon, Mandan football head coach.
“Very good route-runner. He understands the offense and the routes. Most importantly, he understands the defensive tendencies, he understands who’s matched up with him in a specific play,” said Hudson Sheldon, Mandan quarterback.
Like his quarterback, Jensen is also being approached by college football programs.
“At the beginning, it was stressful, but now a lot of colleges, they’re coming to talk to me. It’s kind of like a weight lifted off your chest. I’m just excited for the rest of this senior year, hopefully I get more,” said Jensen, Mandan wide receiver/defensive back.
Jensen is a two-way player, but he seems to be partial to one of them.
“I like them both. If I were to say one I would probably say offense. I feel like as a DB I don’t really get a whole lot of action, when I’m on offense I get a lot more action,” said Jensen.
“When I’m on offense, I’m just thinking run, score, like score score score. When I’m on defense, it’s kind of just, do whatever you can to stop them from scoring,” said Jensen.
Jensen has racked up four touchdowns in two weeks and has cemented himself as a top threat in the Mandan receiving corp
“It definitely all starts in the weight room, that’s for sure. I went all in this year for weight room and I’ve really noticed the results. Film, it’ll help you, it makes you smarter so you know what’s going on on the field. So that all wraps around and it makes the game a whole lot easier,” said Jensen.
Jensen and the third-ranked Braves head east on Friday to take on the top-ranked Sheyenne Mustangs.
