BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Bismarck State College women’s basketball won just four games last season. This year, they are 21-7 and have earned the No. 2 seed in the Mon-Dak Conference Tournament.
“It’s definitely been crazy to see the difference from last season to this season,” sophomore Harys Beauchamp said.
A big part of that jump has been Beulah native Harys Beauchamp becoming one of the best players in the conference.
“Every good team, they have to have an identity at the end of the game,” Mystics’ Head Coach Jason Harris said. “Who are we looking for at least for the ball to go through? And she’s embraced that role, and she’s really thrived on it lately.”
Beauchamp has taken the reins as the top contributor for the Mystics. She’s the team leader in points, rebounds and blocks per game. She’s averaging 16.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
“Going from high school to college at any level is a huge adjustment, just the speed and everything else itself,” Beauchamp said. “So having a year of college basketball under my belt, I think you just come in as a sophomore being a little bit more confident.”
That level of confidence has led her to the top 10 in all three categories in the conference.
“I think Harys understands now she misses three or four in a row, she knows the fifth one is going in,” Harris said. “She has to have that confidence, because we have that in her, but it is something that takes time.”
Beauchamp was part of Beulah’s first state tournament appearance in more than two decades. Now, she hopes to have the same success in the Capital City.
“Just seeing how the community of Bismarck and the surrounding towns come together to watch us play, and have a successful season, and being from Beulah it’s not that far from Bismarck,” Beauchamp said. “I’m lucky enough to have a lot of support from that community.”
The Mystics play in the semifinal round of the Mon-Dak conference tournament on Wednesday.
