The 1A District 1 girls and boys basketball championship games will take place back-to-back on Saturday night, Feb. 15 with a handful of teams competing for the title. Lynden Christian comes in as the favorite for both divisions, but Meridian and Nooksack Valley’s squads will provide some tough challenges on the path to the state tournament.
Western is going to have a double-header with the men’s team tipping off at 3 p.m. and the women’s team following at 7 p.m. against Simon Fraser. Western women are currently in fifth place, but just a couple spots behind Montana State Billings for second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The men’s team is riding a seven-game winning streak and sits fifth in the standings.
The Bellingham Bay Outrigger Paddlers annual small boat race begins at Marine Park in Fairhaven and travels around Clark’s Point into Mud Bay and back to Marine Park. It is a 6-mile course that will finish with hot soups, fire pits and awards for the competitors.
