A new study finds the rise of sports betting is leading to more online searches for “gambling addiction.”
U-C San Diego researchers looked at online searches involving gambling and addiction from 2016-2024.
They found a 23% increase in searches across the country related to finding help.
“Our data show that online gambling legalization leads to more irresponsible gambling spending among lower-income consumers than among higher-income gamblers,” said Kenneth C. Wilbur, professor of marketing and analytics at the Rady School and co-author of the study. “We define gambling irresponsibly as spending a high proportion of their income —for example, 10%—on gambling.”
This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that states can legalize sports betting.
Texas still does not allow sports betting but there is a push to legalize it this legislative session.
