HOWLAND — Spiridon “Spiro” Roussis, 83, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
He was born June 18, 1941, in Alea Argolidos, Greece, the son of Panayotis and Ekaterini Economou Roussis. He was the youngest of seven siblings.
Following high school, he spent five years in the Hellenic army as an M80 tank instructor. In 1964, he moved abroad to Montreal, Quebec, with three of his brothers. He became a Canadian citizen and graduated from technical college as an electrician.
Spiro then came to Warren in 1974 for a job opportunity. He proudly obtained his American citizenship and was employed at WCI Steel in the BOF Maintenance Department for 32 years as a master electrician.
After laying the groundwork for a new life, he returned to Greece in 1977, where he met and married his loving wife, Eleni. They shared 46 years of marriage together and have two daughters.
He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and president of GAPA — the Greek American Progressive Association.
Spending time in and tending to his orange orchard in Greece brought him great joy and tranquility. Above all, he cherished being a “papou” to his two grandsons.
Spiro is survived by his devoted wife; daughters, Catherine (John) Raptis of Cortland and Dimitra (Louis) Bournias of Atlanta, Georgia; grandsons, Nicholas and Spiro; a brother, Stefanos Roussis of Alea, Greece; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews of Montreal, Quebec and Argolidos, Greece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Konstantinos, Christos, Georgios and Pavlos; a sister, Stavroula; and his beloved nephew, Nikolaos.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and staff of Traditions Health for their compassionate care.
Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Spiro from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, Ohio 44481.
A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Rev. Constantine Valantasis and Rev. Dimitri Constantine presiding.
Burial will follow in Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
