Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler all made headlines at the 2024 Genesis Invitational for a wealth of different reasons. And as the 2025 edition of the annual golf event wraps up at Torrey Pines South on Sunday, Express Sport has recapped some of the biggest moments from last year’s event.
This week’s edition of the coveted tournament has seen Patrick Rodgers work his way to the top of the standings following an incredile run on the fairways and greens of San Diego. He currently holds a one-stroke lead at -8 going into Sunday’s final round.
However, Denny McCarthy is hot on his tail, while Ludvig Aberg slacks by two strokes in third place. Elsewhere, the likes of Davis Thompson, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, and Patrick Cantlay are all still in contention for the trophy, but they’ll have to overturn a four stroke deficit should they wish to reign supreme, while hoping that Rodgers slips up in his final round.
And while performances have been incredible at the event, it has been rather uneventful in terms of the drama that golf fans saw unfold at last year’s tournament. But what happened to the likes of Spieth, Woods and Scheffler last February which caused up a stir?
Spieth found himself disqualified for the first time in 263 PGA Tour events at last year’s Genesis Invitational for signing the wrong score on the Friday, mistakingly claiming a three on the par three fourth hole when he actually hit a four. Owning up to his mistake the following day, Spieth took to X to write: “Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct.
“Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA.”

Even the world’s best golfers have their off days, as evidenced by Scheffler’s strop on the par-three fourth hole at the Riviera Golf Course. The world no.1 set up an opportunity for birdie from five feet at the par five 11th hole of the course, missing despite being at incredibly close range.
In furious fashion, he pelted his golf ball into the surrounding wooded area while walking towards the tee box of the 12th. It came as Scheffler’s fifth birdie putt missed in five holes, as he battled with his putter on the greens.
Elsewhere, Woods was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational on the Friday afternoon of the 2024 event, with many fans questioning whether it was due to the back spasms that he was suffering just one day earlier. However, it was quickly revealed that Woods had been suffering flu-like symptoms.
Woods wasn’t seen for two hours following his exit from the tournament, but players and fans alike breathed a sigh of relief when he was finally spotted walking from the clubhouse and into the passenger seat of a courtesy car. It is reported that during his time in the clubhouse, Woods had received treatment in the form of an IV bag for potential dehydration and dizzyness related to his symptoms.
Fast forward to 2025, and Woods once more dropped out of the event – this time, days before a tee shot had even been taken. The 49-year-old confirmed on Monday that he was “just not ready” to return to the game after his mother, Kultida, passed away at the age of 80 last week.
In a statement, Woods said: “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”
As previously mentioned, Rodgers will look to hold onto his one-stroke lead headed into the final round of the Genesis Invitational on Sunday. And he is already in a better position than he was this time last year. That’s because the American failed to make the cut during 2024’s event, finishing with an overall score of two over par.
Positionally, it’s a similar state of affairs for Aberg, who finished T19 alongside the likes of Colin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Adam Scott, and Finau this time last year, with an overall score of six under par. Hideki Matsuyama was crowned the winner of the 2024 Genesis Invitational, scoring nine under par in the final round of the tournament to bolster his overall score to -17. He currently sits T13 headed into the final round of the 2025 event with a score of -2, alongside Nick Taylor and Michael Kim.
