Speed figures 2024: These are the year’s fastest horses

Adding evidence to his case for an Eclipse Award, Sierra Leone earned the highest Brisnet Speed Rating of the year for his win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

With Flavien Prat riding, the Gun Runner colt rallied to win by 1 1/2 lengths, giving trainer Chad Brown his first Classic victory. Sierra Leone earned a 114 Brisnet Speed Rating along with the $3.64 million share of the purse.

Sierra Leone also got a 112 Beyer Speed Figure, but two horses had higher Beyers for the year. Cogburn got a 114 for his world-record, 5 1/2-furlong time of 59.80 seconds in winning the Grade 1 Jaipur to go with a 100 Brisnet. Ova Charged got a 113 Beyer and a 104 Brisnet for her win in the Page Cortez Stakes at Fair Grounds in March.
