A man accused of taking covert videos in the bathroom of a Mays Landing gym allegedly had almost 50 similar recordings on cellphone, police said.
Daniel Zhang, 23, was arrested March 4 after an investigation that began with an incident at Planet Fitness along the Black Horse Pike in September 2024, according to Hamilton Township police.
An investigation found that Zhang, an Egg Harbor City resident, had recorded “numerous people in the bathroom without their consent over the course of months,” a police statement said.
According to a probable cause statement, Zhang was at the Mays Landing gym when police responded to a call about the incident, and he acknowledged recording someone in the men’s room.
“Zhang described the way he recorded as standing in the bathroom stall and reaching the cell phone up to the stop of the bathroom stall barriers,” the statement said.
Zhang, who was charged on a summons for the initial incident, said he had recorded the same man once before within the past month. He also told an officer he had “like four” similar videos on his phone, the statement alleged.
“Zhang stated he has been making these recordings for the past couple months,” including one at a Wawa, it continued.
“After further review of a phone extraction, there were an additional 49 similar videos of numerous unidentified victims” from May to September in 2024, the statement said.
Planet Fitness is not commenting on the charges against Zhang, a gym manager said Wednesday.
Videos also were believed to have been recorded in Medford, Egg Harbor City and Bermuda, among other locations, the statement said.
Zhang was charged with 15 counts of invasion of privacy in Hamilton.
The charges are only allegations. He has not been convicted in the case.
He was held in Atlantic County Jail, pending a detention hearing.
