Sofia Kenin is making her third main draw appearance at the China Open in Beijing. She will be seeking an improvement from 2023, when she was knocked out in the first round. Kenin has had a dismal season in singles, as she has won just nine matches all year. Her record on hard courts is even grimmer, with just three wins from 15 matches. 

Kenin is a five-time champion on the WTA Tour and a former World No. 4, but looks a shadow of her former self right now. She has at least salvaged her season in doubles where she has won two titles this year while partnering compatriot Bethanie Mattek Sands. 

Ana Bogdan has fared slightly better than Kenin in singles this season, with 15 match wins at all levels. The experienced Romanian is also the higher-ranked player in the matchup (120th) on Wednesday at the China Open. 

Bogdan is making her debut appearance in the main draw in Beijing. She has lost her last two matches on hard courts but was a quarterfinalist at the WTA 250 in Cleveland, where she earned a very good win over Leylah Fernandez.

Kenin is in appalling form, and it is tough to see her turn the situation around with just a month of the regular season to go. Doubles form has offered some sort of respite and solace. With just nine wins all season, backing Kenin to win this match is just a bad bet. Bogdan has been unspectacular, but she’s had a much better season, and I’d expect her to grind a victory over an out-of-sorts former Grand Slam champion.
