JONESBORO, Ark. – Behind a four-under par final round from freshman Viggo Hed, the Southeastern Louisiana University men’s golf team posted its low round of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate in Tuesday’s final round at RidgePointe Country Club.
The Lions finished 13th for the week with a tournament score of 879 (+15). Host Arkansas State maintained its day one lead and won by 15 strokes with a score of 822 (-42). ASU’s Thomas Schmidt finished 19-under par for the tournament to run away with individual medalist honors.
After rounds of 297 and 292 Monday, SLU shaved a few strokes off and finished with a two-over par 290 (+2) over the final 18 holes Tuesday.
“We didn’t have our best stuff and this wasn’t our best week,” Southeastern head coach Lawrence Allan said. “Each individual had good moments this week, but we have to eliminate the mental mistakes.”
Sparked by an opening round 67, Griffin Dorr was the top finisher for the Lions with a tournament score of 214 (-2) – good for a tie for 21st place. Hed’s final round 68 allowed him to finish in red numbers for the second straight tournament, carding a one-under par 215 and sitting in a tie for 27th place in the individual standings.
Patrick Blaum (+10, T61st), Colby Sullivan (+11, T64th) and Preston Paulk (+16, T76th) rounded out the Lion starting five.
“Griffin had such a strong start yesterday,” Allan commented. “He started off slowly in the final round, but rallied well to close out and that was a good sign. We were also encouraged that the other four all improved as the tournament went on.”
The completion of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate marks the midway point of the fall portion of Southeastern’s 2024-25 schedule. SLU will return to action Oct. 21-22 at the LaTour Intercollegiate in Mathews, Louisiana.
“We’ve shown the ability to play good golf through the first two tournaments,” Allan said. “We need to be more consistent to close out the fall. If our strongest five are playing their best golf, we can put together two great finishes in our final two fall tournaments.”
The 31st Annual Homecoming Golf Scramble presented by Tangi Tourism and Hampton Inn is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 8:30 a.m. at Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond and all proceeds benefit the SLU golf program. Registration information is available by visiting https://lionsports.net/sports/laa.
