The NBA announced on Thursday that Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has been named the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner for his efforts in the communities of Philadelphia and Dallas this past summer. Along with the honor, the NBA also announced that it will donate $10,000 to the Tyrese Maxey Foundation.

The award is given to acknowledge NBA players for giving back to their communities. The honor is given to one player each month during the regular season as well as one season-long winner per year. An offseason award has been given out as well in recent years, which is what Maxey is being honored for.

“It’s such an honor … I’m grateful to even be in a position to make a difference in the lives of Philadelphia- and Dallas-area youth,” Maxey said in a statement. “I believe in the power of education and sports to transform lives and am committed to supporting our youth as they pursue their dreams. Thank you to the NBA for this recognition, and to everyone who has supported the Tyrese Maxey Foundation along the way.”

This is Maxey’s second Community Assist Award after earning the honor back in November of 2022. The 23-year-old is just the third in Sixers’ franchise history to receive the award multiple times, alongside Allen Iverson (2) and Samuel Dalembert (2).

When the young guard wasn’t in the gym getting bulked up and ready for the 2024-25 NBA season, he was busy dedicating his time and effort to his home city of Dallas and his current home city of Philadelphia. Maxey and his foundation launched the Tyrese Maxey Foundation Friends and Family Weekend in Philadelphia, which included a free basketball skills camp, giveaways, time with Maxey himself and more for local kids. At this event, he announced the establishment of two scholarships, one for a college student, one for a community partner, as well as committed to donating $1 million to Philadelphia-based youth organizations.

He then traveled back to his hometown to host another basketball camp, which included a free golf clinic for youth in the area, in Dallas. Across the two weekends, Maxey and the foundation hosted more than 700 kids.

Maxey will be recognized for the award and presented with the Bob Lanier trophy during a celebration prior to tipoff of the team’s season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 23 at the Wells Fargo Center.
