There are some destinations everyone needs to visit during the fall. The apple orchard. Pumpkin patch. Haunted house. Hayride. Your couch, watching your favorite scary movies or old episodes of the Gilmore Girls. Above all, you have to go to Costco.
Of course, every time of year is a prime time for a money-saving trip to Costco. But there are some unique pleasures to shopping in the fall. GOBankingRates checked in with some experts to find out what they’d put in their carts on a Costco trip in the fall.
As a Costco aficionado and publicist at Otter Public Relations, Pilar Lewis keeps her finger on the pulse of the hottest trends. She knows exactly what she’d put in her Costco cart — and, to paraphrase the old song, she wants candy.
Costco is the prime place to get Halloween candy in bulk. She advised everyone to get their trick or treat candy at Costco. Be the most popular house on the block with scary good treats at Costco. A bag of Kirkland Signature chocolate candies costs $22.99 for 90 ounces.
On her hypothetical Costco trip, Lewis definitely would make room in her cart for this Costco staple.
“On cold days that you don’t feel like cooking, their rotisserie chicken is the perfect thing to grab on your way home from work,” she said. “It is inexpensive and you can use it for so many different things.”
Everyone knows that apples and pears are the go-to fruit of fall, but Mackenzie Burgess, registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and recipe developer at Cheerful Choices, has a very different fruit in mind. Go on a date (get it?) with medjool dates when you’re on your next Costco shopping trip.
“Medjool dates are a fresh fruit with a caramel-like taste, making them perfect to satisfy any sweet tooth. As a dietitian, I love how they’re filled with potassium, iron and satiating fiber without any added sugars,” she said. “I always like to stock up on Natural Delights Medjool dates at Costco with their 24-ounce pack. You can enjoy them alone or try making ‘date Snickers’ stuffed with peanut butter and chocolate as a better-for-you Halloween candy swap.”
To say that Kristen Markel, voice behind the popular blog WarehouseWanderer.com, is a Costco superfan would be an understatement. She’s devoted a lot of her writing talent to helping people make the most out of their Costco memberships, going so far as to make weekly trips to the warehouse to learn more. She’s excited by the deals she’s seen on Old El Paso Taco kits.
“Taco night doesn’t have to be limited to Tuesdays. With these Old El Paso kits, dinner is ready in no time. Each box includes sauce, tortillas and seasoning — just add your favorite toppings. While a single kit costs $4.79 at local grocery stores, Costco offers three for only $7.49, making this a total steal,” she said.
Sure, the rotisserie chicken may be the star of the deli department, but according to Markel, the Kirkland Signature pulled pork has closed in on it as the ideal option for dinners, sandwiches or even appetizers.
“Kirkland Signature Pulled Pork got a recipe makeover in 2023 and it’s better than ever,” she said. “The updated version removes nitrates and keeps the ingredient list simple, letting the smoky flavor of the meat shine through.”
You can find it for roughly $14.99.
