EDISTO BEACH, S.C. – Abigail Sheldon put together her first top 10 performance as a Lancer, and Longwood women’s golf finished 10th out of 16 teams at the Edisto Island Invitational.
Sheldon finished tied for ninth after posting a 69-76-74—219 (+6).
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Longwood shaved six strokes as a team off their second-round score, but they finished five shots back of ninth.
Sheldon had a trio of birdies in her third and final round, and the freshman wrapped up the three-round event with nine birdies.
She closed strong, firing an even 35 on her final nine holes to wrap up the event and finish tied for ninth.
Chiara Wippert, also a freshman, tied for 31st behind a consistent round. She had a pair of birdies on the day and posted her second straight 76.
Breanna Hoese moved up two spots into a tie for 42nd after shaving four strokes off her second round score. She too closed well, shaking off a slow start. She was even to par over her final 10 holes to finish the round with a 76.
Ester Choi also chipped off five strokes from her second round score, and she tied for 61st. Aine Martin tied for 73rd.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“The goals for today were to follow our strategy for easy pars and to get back to the headspace of round one,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “Overall, we stayed more positive and demonstrated better resilience. Abigail had a fantastic tournament, and I’m excited about her first top 10 finish! Chiara and Bre had nothing worse than bogey today, proving success to the first goal of smarter play.”
“Starting the day three strokes from seventh—and after seeing how low we could go in round one—I’d hoped to climb the leaderboard today,” Weaver added. “We have a quick turnaround to our next tournament this weekend, so we will focus on building back some confidence over the coming days.”
