BURLINGTON, N.C. – Abigail Sheldon put together two solid rounds back-to-back for Longwood women’s golf to open up the 2024-25 campaign.
The freshman is tied for 13th through two rounds at the Elon Invitational with a 75-74—149 (+7) at the Par 71 course at Alamance Country Club.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers are 11th out of 14 teams with a 304-309—613 (+45). The team is only two shots back of cracking the top 10, and the team is only eight shots back of sixth.
Sheldon’s consistency helped her cause on a day when low scores were tough to come by. Her second round of 74 was tied for the sixth-lowest round in the field.
In her second round, she made par on 11 holes and added two birdies, with nothing worse than a bogey on her ledger. Her first round saw 13 pars and a birdie.
Fellow Longwood newcomer Chiara Wippert finished tied for 28th with a 75-78—153 (+11). She had 13 pars and a birdie in her opening round to get off to a strong start.
Sophomore Breanna Hoese finished the day in the top half of the 82-player field, tying for 39th with a 77-78—155 (+13).
WHAT THEY SAID:
“Today was a battle of the elements,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “Round one was on and off rain but steady 15-20 mph winds. Round two was constant rain from the tropical storm. I’m really proud of my freshmen leading the team in their collegiate tournament debuts!”
“Overall, teh team chipped well and stayed positive and persistent throughout the day,” Weaver added. “We underestimated the break on quite a few putts, which is easy to do with the amount of slope on these greens. The rain caused doubt in the full shots. Fortunately and unfortunately, it hasn’t rained on us all fall, so it’s not something we’ve had practice in. It’s been a good learning experience for our first tournament!”
