Young Agni Chopra has been making the right noises in India’s domestic cricket since making his debut for Mizoram. The left-handed batter is the son of film critic Anupama Chopra and renowned filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who made movies like 12th Fail, 3 Idiots, Munna Bhai MBBS and other blockbusters over the last four decades.

Recently, Shashi Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, stumbled upon Agni’s cricket records. He highlighted Agni’s incredible record in first-class cricket, where the 25-year-old averages 99.06 from nine matches with eight hundreds and four fifties. Agni was born on November 4, 1998 in Detroit in Michigan.

Shashi Tharoor wrote, “As one who browses Indian domestic scores whenever he can, I came up short with this amazing find — an Indian batsman who averages a Bradmanesque 99.06 in 9 first-class matches, with 8 centuries and 4 fifties in 17 innings! His name is AgniDev Chopra, he was born in Detroit, and he plays for Mizoram! All I could find on him is a February profile on @ESPNcricinfo. When will our mainstream cricket journalists check him out?”

Seeing Tharoor’s tweet, Agni’s mother Anupama was filled with pride for her beloved son. Excited about his son, Anupama dropped a reply, writing, “I gave birth to him.”

Agni Chopra shines for Mizoram

In his maiden first-class season, Agni finished as the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy Plate League. In six games, he scored 939 runs at an average of 78.25 and a strike-rate of 103.30 with five hundreds and three fifties to show for his efforts.

Back in February, he had become the first batter to rack up hundreds in his first four first-class games. He got scores of 105, 101, 114, 10, 164, 15, 166 and 92 in his first four matches in the Ranji Trophy at a mind-boggling average of 111.80.

In the ongoing Ranji season, Agni has scored 646 runs from three games at an average of 161.50 and a strike-rate of 86.47 with three hundreds and one fifty. His top score of 238 not out came against Arunchal Pradesh at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad.
