The England women’s cricket team have come in for more heavy criticism after their miserable Ashes tour of Australia hit an embarrassing new low on Saturday night. The Aussies thrashed the Poms by 72 runs in the third T20, completing a clean sweep of all six white-ball games in the series.
With just the Test match to come, Australia holds an unassailable 12-0 lead in the series and have already retained the Ashes urn. Beth Mooney smacked a superb 94 not out from 63 balls as Australia posted 5-162 at Adelaide Oval while batting first.
England were then bowled out for just 90 in 17.3 overs as their tour from hell sunk to a horrid new low. Georgia Wareham took 3-11 as Australia swept the three-match T20 series after also winning all three ODIs. The Aussies can seal the perfect Ashes series with victory in the one-off Test match at the MCG starting on Thursday.
“The Test match is going to offer a different challenge for both teams across that four-day period,” Mooney said on Saturday night. “But certainly we won’t be wanting to let England back into the series at all.
“The ruthless nature of this group is that we want to compete and really drive it home. England will have a bit to think about obviously, the next few days, and I’m sure they’ll come out really hard and want to get a Test match win – as we will as well.”
English cricket fans have been disgusted by what they’ve witnessed throughout the tour, and their performance on Saturday night was labelled “embarrassing” and “pathetic”. One person even commented: “Just get them home now before they bring any more shame on the country.”
Speaking on ABC radio, Aussie legend Jason Gillespie said it feels like England are “just trying to entertain” rather than worry about results – similar to what the men’s team are trying to achieve with ‘Bazball’. “Well, the England women’s team aren’t that entertaining at the moment,” Gillespie said.
“They’ve tried to go out there and smack it everywhere, but you’ve got to adapt and adjust to conditions and situations in games. To just go out and play one style and hope for the best, it feels like a Hail Mary to me. I think it’s a bit of a cop-out.”
This is an embarrassing performance from ENG. Just get them home now before they bring any more shame on the country.

#bbccricket everything Alex Hartley said was the truth – another embarrassing result and performance this morning. Looking less likely can avoid an inevitable whitewash now. Changes needed because this isn’t acceptable for any England first team

Speaking on Saturday before the third T20, England coach Jon Lewis responded to claims from former player Alex Hartley that the Poms simply aren’t fit enough. Hartley was recently snubbed by former teammate Sophie Ecclestone, who refused to do an interview with her over comments criticising the team.
On Saturday, Lewis made bizarre claims that Australia are just better than England due to the weather and culture Down Under. “They’re more agile, they look faster, at times they look more powerful,” he said in regards to the Aussie players.
“Is that the reason that we’re not winning cricket matches here in this country? No. We definitely need to get faster and we can access more power, for sure. If you’re talking about whether or not we can run marathons, we don’t need to. We need to be fit for purpose.
“I walked from Bondi to Coogee the other Sunday morning, and pretty much every Australian in the eastern suburbs was in the water. There’s about a million kids down there, and they were doing Surf Life Saving, or playing touch rugby. For me, that’s a cultural difference. I definitely think Australia have an advantage in terms of athleticism.”
Those comments have since been savaged, with English commentator Alison Mitchell writing: “Such a curious quote this about Australia having a cultural advantage due to outdoor lifestyle. Elite sportsmen and women push themselves to do it in whatever climate they grow up in. If we subscribe to this, what hope for British sport.”
It’s such an odd way of looking at it. The flip side is surely that going out to play in freezing weather in a light drizzle builds your character and stamina and temperament. We have to want to do it and be determined, we should be stronger as a result. That we’re not says a lot…

You can make it whatever climate or conditions, if anything it builds your character and makes you more robust doing it in the tougher conditions.

Embarrassing this from England women’s coach Jon Lewis about how the “cultural difference” because of Australia’s warmer weather is part of the reason his team aren’t doing very well. https://t.co/Z975uyv7cR
