Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in international cricket after being banned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for an illegal action following his one-off appearance in the 2024 County Championship.
The former Bangladesh captain failed an independent assessment of his bowling action at Loughborough University, an ECB-accredited testing facility after being reported for an illegal action during his one match for Surrey in the County Championship. The results found that his elbow extension in his bowling action was more than the permitted 15 degrees.
As per clause 11.3 of ICC’s regulation for illegal bowling, a ban imposed by a national federation is automatically enforced in international cricket and domestic competitions of the respective federations.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that national team all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket,” the BCB confirmed in a statement.

“Should the results of this analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket and domestic cricket competitions under the jurisdiction of all national cricket federations.”
The ban adds another chapter to the Bangladesh all-rounder’s tumultuous year. Shakib was a member of parliament for the ousted Awami League government leading to doubts as to whether he could return to the country at one point. He retired from T20Is and his wish to call time on his Test career at home in Dhaka couldn’t come to fruition amid safety concerns. He is still a part of the ODI outfit but wasn’t picked for the Afghanistan and West Indies series recently.
Shakib is currently representing the Galle Marvels in the Lanka T10 competition.
