However, Williams and Ohanian bonded over a nerdy interest.
Dating one of the greatest athletes of all time doesn’t come easy, and Alexis Ohanian quickly learned that after going out with Serena Williams for the first time. While the couple ultimately hit it off and jump started the rest of their love story, the Reddit co-founder revealed that his first date with Williams involved an intense interrogation and back up from her team.
“Serena, her assistant, her agent [Jill Smoller], and then me on the other said of the table, and they just bombarded me with questions,” he said in the latest episode of Williams’s ESPN+ docu-series, In The Arena. “It was like two hours of interrogation and questions. Do I have kids, am I married. Nothing was off limits.”
Williams confirmed that Ohanian was grilled on their first date, saying, “Jill asked him straight up like, ‘What’s up with your girlfriend?’ and he’s like, ‘I don’t have a girlfriend.’ He was saying that he had broken up with her. It changed things when he said that because I was like, okay, now he’s not being this beast.”
Despite having an entire audience sitting in on their first date, the tennis champion explained that Ohanian brought up the one thing that could make her fall for him. “During dinner he started talking about Iron Man and Marvel, and that’s the way to my heart,” she revealed.
Ohanian added, “This wasn’t just a superficial, ‘Hey I’ve watched a few movies.’ This is, ‘I have deeply studied the text and I have strong opinions about this lore.'”
As they say, the rest is history—the pair started dating in 2015, and became engaged in December of 2016. On September 1, 2017, the couple welcomed their first daughter Olympia and married later that year in November. Their second daughter, Adira, arrived on August 15, 2023.
