Tennis legend Serena Williams has been unveiled as part of the ownership team for the newly formed WNBA franchise, Toronto Tempo. The announcement came on Monday, with Kilmer Sports Ventures as majority owners, led by Larry Tanenbaum and team president Teresa Resch. This marks a historic moment as Toronto becomes the first Canadian city to host a WNBA team, while the NBA’s Toronto Raptors remain the sole Canadian representatives in their league. Following the league’s expansion into Toronto and the introduction of the Golden State Valkyries, the Tempo will be the 15th team in the WNBA, set to make their debut in the 2026 season.
An excited Williams shared her enthusiasm: “I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo. This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes. I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”
The addition of Williams as an owner is set to have an unparalleled effect, according to Tempo President Resch, given her extraordinary tennis legacy and influence as a role model for women athletes. Resch was effusive in his praise: “Serena is a champion. She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible.
“She’s set the bar for women in sport, business and the world – and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring. We’re thrilled to be marking the lead-up to International Women’s Day with this announcement.”
Additionally, Williams will contribute to the design of team jerseys and collaborate on merchandise.
Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, lauded Williams’ status as a global icon and agent for change. “Serena Williams is an icon, a role model and a force for change in the world” he stated.
“She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for – we couldn’t be more honoured to have Serena in our court.”
Starting from 2026, the Tempo will host home games at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, currently the home ground for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, which is home to the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Although the Coliseum can seat 8,000 fans, there are plans to spread the Toronto team’s regular-season home games across Canada.
Williams’ investment in Tempo is yet to receive the final nod from the league, but her sports business portfolio continues to grow. She already owns shares in Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC and Los Angeles Golf Club.
