WATFORD CITY – The Minot North Sentinels boys soccer team continues their journey through history with the list of firsts each week. This week, the team won a game on the road – it is the second win for the team, but the first when the Sentinels scored the goal for the win.
The Watford City Wolves played the visitors to a 0-0 tie after the first half of the game. The second half started the same way, with both home and visiting teams working the middle of the field. After nine minutes of play in the second half, sophomore Logan Ovitt passed the ball to freshman Jayden Marshall who found the back of the net for Minot North and the 1-0 lead.
Both teams went back to the defensive stalemate for another 25 minutes. With five minutes left in the game, eighth grader Jace Hoaglund threaded the ball to fellow eighth grader Jackson Guss for the second goal of the contest and the 2-0 win for the Sentinels.
Minot North sophomore Griffin Wald recorded four saves in the game. The Sentinels had 12 shots on goal in the win.
In their first win, the 1-0 score was courtesy of the opposing team having the ball ricochet into the net for an ‘own goal’ situation for the win. The 2-0 score over the Wolves was the first win with the scoring done by the team.
Ovitt is still the current points leader in Western Dakota Association (WDA) play for the Sentinels with four points, all coming from goals scored. Emerson Ries is second with 3 points from two goals and one assist. Gavin Wald has two points from assists while Malychi Baldwin and Jayden Marshall each have one goal on the season.
Wald has faced 96 shots and has 64 saves on the season. Macklin Kelly has faced 28 shots and recorded 22 saves in relief. Brantley Robinson has faced eight shots and has four saves as well.
Minot North (1-7-0, 2-9-0) will travel to Bismarck High (3-5-1, 3-5-1) on Thursday, September 12, and end the week by hosting the top team in the Western Dakota Standings – Jamestown (9-0-0, 9-0-0) on Saturday at Sentinels Stadium.
