Shawnee Heights’ KK Emmot on winning the Capital City Classic
KK Emmot scored 36 points as she dominated on Saturday. Her performance helped Shawnee Heights defeat Washburn Rural 59-54 in the Capital City Classic.
TOPEKA— It was another wild week of high school action in the capital city. More basketball tournaments occurred while city swimming and top tier wrestling tournaments took place.
Here are the top performances from the Topeka area from Jan. 27-Feb 1.

Jaret Sanchez, Shawnee Heights basketball: The senior continues to be one of the best scorers in the UKC this season. He had a game-high 21 points in the team’s 82-30 win over Leavenworth.
KaeVon Bonner, Seaman basketball: The point guard led the Vikings to a 73-64 win over Topeka High with a team-high 16 points.
Jaxon Cowdin, Topeka High diving: The senior won his fourth straight diving title in the City Championship with a score of 253.15.
Kristjan Marshall, Washburn Rural wrestling: Marshall finished with a 55 second pin to highlight the Junior Blues’ 54-28 duel win over Mill Valley.
Andres Morao-Jaspe, Washburn Rural swimming: The sophomore was the lone competitor to win every race that they competed in during the City Championship. Morao-Jaspe took individual titles in the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle. He also helped the Junior Blues win two relays as Washburn Rural won the team title, too.
Simon Rowley, Washburn Rural basketball: The junior tied a team-high 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field along with five rebounds.
Jaret Sanchez, Shawnee Heights basketball: The senior led the team with 26 points in the Thunderbirds 66-48 win over Topeka West.
Brody Brown, Shawnee Heights wrestling: Brown went 4-0 in the Junction City Invite winning the 138-pound division. All four of his wins came via pin in the tournament.
Easton Broxterman, Washburn Rural wrestling: The senior won the 144-pound division of the Shawnee Mission North Invitational. He had two pins and two technical falls during the tournament that saw Washburn Rural take the team title.
Garett Holmes, Silver Lake wrestling: Holmes won the 132-pound weight class at the Junction City Invite as he went 3-0 highlighted by a 22-5 technical fall in the title bout.
Jude Krentz, Hayden wrestling: The senior went 4-0 with all of his finishes being pins in the BIT hosted by Baldwin High School. With his performance, Krentz won the 175-pound division.
Deyton Mentzer, Seaman wrestling: Mentzer won the 215-pound weight class of the SEK Invitational with two pins on the day.

Rylee Dick, Rossville basketball: The junior scored 24 points in Rossville’s 49-40 win over Atchison County in the quarterfinals of the Jefferson County North Invitational.
Kailyn Hanni, Silver Lake basketball: The junior hit one of the most improbable buzzer beaters of the season. With the team trailing, the Eagles forced a turnover and she hit a dagger 3-pointer to give Silver Lake a 50-49 win over Rock Creek.
Anna Becker, Seaman basketball: The senior scored 14 points and had six assists in the Vikings’ 56-15 win over Wichita Northwest in the first round of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament.
Imani McGlory, Topeka West basketball: The junior scored 28 points in an OT win over Highland Park during the first round of the Capital City Classic. McGlory went 17-for-18 from the free-throw line in the win.
Hailey Schmidtlein, Hayden basketball: The freshman scored a game-high 21 points in the team’s 64-15 win over El Dorado in the Lady Cat Classic first round game.
Reianna Vega, Shawnee Heights basketball: The junior scored a team-high 19 points including a jumper to send the game to OT against Blue Valley. Vega helped the Thunderbirds defeat Blue Valley 54-47 in the first round of the Capital City Classic.
Maddie Vickery, Washburn Rural: The sophomore scored a game-high 21 points in Washburn Rural’s 76-25 win over Lawrence Free State in the Capital City Classic opener.
KK Emmot, Shawnee Heights basketball: The sophomore guard scored a game-high 25 points in the Thunderbirds’ 65-32 win over Topeka West in the Capital City Classic semifinal. Maddie Gragg, Seaman basketball: The junior was making every shot she took in the semifinal of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament. Gragg scored a game-high 27 points in the Vikings’ 70-45 win over Shawnee Mission South.
Amelia Ramsey, Hayden basketball: The senior scored 19 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lift the Wildcats over Gardner-Edgerton 57-49 in the El Dorado Lady Cat Classic semifinals.
Ahsieyrhuajh Rayton, Topeka High basketball: It was a big game for the sophomore guard. Rayton scored 24 points to give the Trojans an 84-45 win over Wichita Northwest in the consolation semifinal of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament.
Maddie Vickery, Washburn Rural basketball: The Kansas State commit had a game-high 33 points in the Junior Blues’ 75-48 win in the semifinals of the Capital City Classic.
Claire Whitemore, Rossville basketball: The freshman scored a career-high 11 points in the Bulldawgs’ 43-32 win over Jefferson County North in their home tournament.
Anna Becker, Seaman basketball: The Drake signee scored 21 points to lift Seaman to the title of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament by defeating Derby 63-50. Becker’s performance over the weekend helped her become the all-time scorer in Seaman school history.
Pearmella Carter, Highland Park basketball: Carter scored 18 points to give Highland Park a 60-39 win over Lawrence Free State in the seventh place game of the Capital City Classic.
KK Emmot, Shawnee Heights basketball: The sophomore willed the Thunderbirds to the Capital City Classic title by defeating Washburn Rural 59-54. She scored a game-high 36 points as she helped erase a 16-point deficit to take the championship.
Teairra Gonzales, Topeka West basketball: Gonzales scored a team-high 14 points as she led Topeka West to a 58-53 win over Lawerence High to finish third in the Capital City Classic.
Keimara Marshall, Topeka High basketball: Marshall scored 15 points to help the Trojans claim fifth place in the Glacier’s Edge Tournament. Topeka High earned the 51-45 win over over Wichita South.
Isabel Reyes, Shawnee Heights wrestling: Reyes won the 130-pound division fo the Junction City Invite with three straight pins. Reyes holds a season-long record of 29-1, too. Reyes helped Shawnee Heights win the team title by 49.5 points.
Ashley Schwarz, Washburn Rural wrestling: Schwarz won the 155-pound division in her home tournament. She went 4-0 with all wins coming via pin as she has racked up a season-long record of 25-5. She helped the Junior Blues win the team championship by 61.5 points over Manhattan.
