Octavian McFadden on Topeka High’s first win of the season
Octavian McFadden scored a game-high 18 points in Topeka High’s 65-60 win over Hayden on Tuesday. It was the first win of the season for the Trojans.
TOPEKA — It was another busy week of high school sports action in the capital city. State tournament berths were punched for girls wrestling while conference swimming took centerstage.
Here are the top performances from the Topeka area from Feb 10-15:

Mikey Williams, Highland Park basketball: The senior dropped a game-high 18 points in the Scots’ 63-25 win over F.L. Schlagle at home.
KaeVon Bonner, Seaman basketball: The junior guard led the Vikings to a 68-66 win over Shawnee Heights. Bonner scored a team-high 26 points with 13 of them coming in the fourth quarter.
Truman Brede, Shawnee Heights swimming: Brede was the lone Topeka-area swimmer to win an individual title in the United Kansas Conference Championship. He took the crown in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.59.
Brody Deiter, Silver Lake basketball: Deiter scored 15 points in the Eagles’ 64-50 win over Marysville.
Kamoni Ford, Topeka West basketball: The senior scored 12 points in the 77-57 win over Lansing. Ford was one of five players to reach double figures for the Chargers.
John Hoytal, Washburn Rural basketball: The junior scored a team-high 18 points in the Junior Blues’ 74-45 win against Manhattan.
Octavian McFadden, Topeka High basketball: The junior was clutch with big baskets in the fourth quarter against Hayden. He scored a game-high 18 points as the Trojans defeated the Wildcats 65-60 for Topeka High’s first win of the season.
Cameron Miller, Rossville basketball: Miller was unstoppable scoring 27 points in the team’s 72-41 win over Royal Valley.
Jaret Sanchez, Shawnee Heights basketball: The senior scored a game-high 39 points in the Thunderbirds’ 2-point defeat to Seaman on the road.
Jaxon Cowdin, Topeka High diving: The senior won his third straight Centennial League Championship with a score of 428.75. Cowdin was the lone Shawnee County athlete to take an individual title.
Remington Droegemeier, Rossville wrestling: Droegemeier won the Big East Conference individual title in the 138-pound division with a 3-0 record.
Dayne Johnson, Silver Lake basketball: Johnson couldn’t be stopped as he scored 35 points in the Eagles’ 64-60 win over St. Marys.
Carter Spreer, Silver Lake wrestling: The 215-pound wrestler took the Big East Conference title with a 3-0 record as all three victories came via pin. He helped Silver Lake win the conference title by 12 points over Holton.
Kamoni Ford, Topeka West basketball: Ford finished with a team-high 13 points in Topeka West’s 69-46 win over Leavenworth.
Dayne Johnson, Silver Lake basketball: Johnson was the leader in the box score with 18 points in Silver Lake’s 61-48 win over Royal Valley.
Deacon Pomeroy, Shawnee Heights basketball: The senior scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double as the Thunderbirds won 79-55 over De Soto.
Simon Rowley, Washburn Rural basketball: The junior finished with a team-high 18 points in the team’s 64-58 win over Junction City.

Topeka High’s Elisha Guest nailed a half court shot to end the third quarter. His shot helped the Trojans defeat Hayden 65-60 for their first win of the season on Tuesday.
Pearmella Carter, Highland Park basketball: Carter was the leading scorer for the Scots with 20 points in the team’s 79-11 win over FL Schlagle.
Karys Deiter, Silver Lake basketball: The Eagles earned a 61-36 win over Marysville thanks to Deiter’s 13 points which were a team-high.
Maddie Gragg, Seaman basketball: The junior scored 23 points and knocked down five 3-pointers in the Vikings’ 64-54 win against Shawnee Heights.
Hailey Schmidtlein, Hayden basketball: The freshman was the top scorer for the Wildcats with 19 points. Schmidtlein helped the team win 55-49 over Topeka High.
Maddie Vickery, Washburn Rural basketball: The sophomore was the leading scorer for the Junior Blues once again. She scored a game-high 27 points in the team’s 58-28 win against Manhattan.
KellyAnn Chada, Cair Paravel basketball: Chada was the leading scorer for the Lions with 25 points despite Cair Paravel’s 30-28 loss to Council Grove.
Kailyn Hanni, Silver Lake basketball: The junior guard was able to score at will with a team-high 22 points in Silver Lake’s 67-54 win over St. Marys.
Hailey Caryl, Topeka High basketball: The freshman scored a team-high 22 points in the Trojans 64-52 win over Manhattan.
Rylee Dick, Rossville basketball: The junior dropped 22 points in the team’s 38-34 win over Abilene.
Kate Hinck, Washburn Rural basketball: The guard was able to score a game-high 17 points in the team’s 70-13 win over Junction City. All of Hinck’s points came in the first half.
Brylee Meier, Hayden basketball: The senior tied a game-high 15 points in the Wildcats’ 66-25 win against Emporia.
Savannah Wende, Silver Lake basketball: The left-handed sharpshooter broke a school record by making seven 3-pointers in Silver Lake’s 67-34 win against Royal Valley.
Koti Best, Seaman wrestling: The senior won the Class 5A West Regional title in the 125-pound division with three pins out of her four victories.
Emmerson Blanco, Washburn Rural wrestling: Blanco was the 140-pound champion in the Class 6A West Regional with a 4-0 record. She was dominant with four pins in the tournament.
Reece Taylor, Shawnee Heights wrestling: Taylor won the Class 5A East Regional Championship in the 125-pound weight class. She won all three of her bouts via pin.
