The SEC women’s basketball tournament’s top seed came down to a coin toss.
Both the Texas Longhorns (29-2) and South Carolina Gamecocks (27-3) ended the regular-season as co-champions with a 15-1 record in SEC play. The Longhorns and Gamecocks split the season series, meaning the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament would come down to pure luck. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey performed a coin flip and landed on South Carolina’s emblem, meaning Gamecocks earned the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
“Much respect to our conference. The Southeastern Conference is the best conference in the country,” head coach Dawn Staley said following South Carolina’s 78-66 win over Kentucky on Sunday. “To win another regular-season conference championship means a great deal, because these aren’t going to come by very easily.”
South Carolina has won the SEC tournament four of the last five years. The SEC division as a whole has won the NCAA Tournament the past three years — South Carolina, 2024; LSU, 2023; South Carolina, 2022.
