JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Seven-time ASUN Conference Coach of the Year Scott Schroeder, who has served as the head coach of the men’s golf program for almost two decades, has been promoted to Director of Golf, as announced by Director of Athletics Nick Morrow on Wednesday afternoon.
“I look forward to the new role and challenge of being Director of Golf,” said Schroeder. “I look forward to helping all of our golfers chase their dreams on and off the course.”
In this newly-created role, Schroeder will continue to serve as the head coach of the men’s golf team, while overseeing both the men’s and women’s collegiate programs. Courtney Cobb has also been promoted to help lead the women’s golf team as their associate head coach, while Michael Mattiace will assist with both programs.
“I couldn’t be happier with the staff that is in place to lead, coach, and mentor our golf student-athletes,” said Morrow. “Scott [Schroeder], Courtney [Cobb], and Mikey [Mattiace] are all Ospreys who are passionate about UNF, the city of Jacksonville, and the golf program. They have strong relationships with the community and will create a great student-athlete experience, while winning championships.”
“Scott [Schroeder] is the most successful coach in the history of UNF Athletics and I look forward to his influence over the entire golf program as Director of Golf,” Morrow continued. “Courtney [Cobb] is UNF Golf through and through, and I know she will take full advantage of this opportunity to make a difference for the program. I am also very excited to bring Mikey [Mattiace] back to UNF in a coaching role. Any time we can bring back one of our own to advance the program, it is a good day.”
As the most tenured coach among North Florida’s 17 athletic programs, Schroeder has helped lead the Osprey men’s squad to seven ASUN Championships and seven NCAA Championship appearances since taking over as the interim head coach in January of 2006. In the conference tournament, he has been either the champion or runner-up in 12 of his 18 seasons, while never finishing below fourth throughout his entire tenure.
Since taking over in 2006, Schroeder has guided the team to 28 tournament team titles and 15 NCAA Regional appearances, including 14 straight dating back to 2010. He also served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee from 2016-20 and currently has oversight of managing the Hayt Golf Center on the UNF campus, which serves as a practice facility and home headquarters for both the men’s and women’s golf programs.
Schroeder has helped develop some of the best golfers in program history producing seven PING All-Americans, eight ASUN Golfers of the Year, eight ASUN Freshmen of the Year and 41 All-ASUN honorees, including 29 first-team selections. His most recent star golfer, Nick Gabrelcik, went on to finish his career as a four-time ASUN Golfer of the Year and finished No. 5 on the PGA Tour U rankings to earn his Korn Ferry Tour card.
The Clearwater, Fla., native adds 71 ASUN Golfer of the Week selections, 25 ASUN All-Tournament honorees and 29 tournament individual medalists as well, including four ASUN Championship medalists, to his resume. He also constructed strong academic presence in his program with 74 ASUN Academic Honor Roll members, six ASUN All-Academic selections, and a pair of CSC Academic All-District selections.
Schroeder has been a part of the program dating back 30 years, where he was a men’s golf letterwinner at UNF from 1994-98, which was the team’s inaugural season at the Division I level. He went on to serve as an assistant coach from 2002-04 and was the director of the Hayt Golf Center from 2004-06 before moving into the head coaching chair.
A familiar face takes the reins as associate head coach of the women’s golf program, as Courtney Cobb earns a promotion after serving the past four years as an assistant coach.
“Courtney [Cobb] is a UNF graduate and Jacksonville lifer, which makes her a perfect fit to take on the new role,” said Schroeder. “I look forward to working with her, as we raise the brand of UNF golf in the Jacksonville area for men’s and women’s golf.”
A native of Jacksonville, Cobb has helped the Ospreys produce two of the most successful seasons in program history. Her time as assistant coach has been highlighted by UNF setting program records for best 18-hole and 54-hole totals, best scoring average, back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances, and sending an individual to its first NCAA Championship appearance in school history.
During a historic 2022 season, Cobb assisted with coaching three All-ASUN selections, two ASUN All-Tournament selections, and two medalist crown winners. The Ospreys also placed inside the top-three in six tournaments on the year, including team titles at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, the UNF Collegiate, and the squad’s first ASUN Championship since 2017.
“I am honored to take on the role of Associate Head Coach at UNF! As an Osprey alum and Jacksonville native, this program, the community and the people within it mean the world to me,” said Cobb. “I’d like to thank Nick [Morrow] and the athletic department for this special opportunity. I am eternally grateful for the people who have helped me grow both as a student-athlete and a coach throughout my time at UNF. I look forward to continuing the growth and success of our student-athletes academically, athletically and personally. SWOOP!”
Over Cobb’s four seasons as an assistant coach at UNF, she helped bring in 12 All-ASUN selections, six ASUN All-Tournament selections, three ASUN All-Freshman selections, two ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year selections and the program’s first pair of ASUN Golfers of the Year selections. She also helped produce on the academic side with 40 ASUN Academic Honor Roll members and seven Academic All-ASUN selections.
On top of that, Cobb has assisted in bringing home seven team titles, including an ASUN Championship, four medalist crown winners, two team NCAA Regional appearances, two individual NCAA Regional appearance and an NCAA Championship individual appearance. She also helped develop Osprey standout Christin Eisenbeiss, who holds the majority of records in the program’s history as reigning back-to-back ASUN Golfer of the Year.
Cobb played three seasons from 2015-18 with the Ospreys as a three-time ASUN Academic Honor Roll distinction, while also being a member of both squads that went on to win back-to-back ASUN Championship titles in 2016 and 2017. The 2016 women’s golf team went on to be inducted into the UNF Athletics Hall of Fame this past winter.
Another former Osprey returns to their roots with Michael Mattiace joining the coaching staff as an assistant coach for this upcoming season.
“Mikey [Mattiace] is a great fit to help on both the men’s and women’s teams,” said Schroeder. “His wife is a former UNF golfer, so he has been around women’s golf a good amount. His temperament and drive to win will be great for all the players to be around.”
Mattiace jumped right into action during his first season helping UNF to a top-three team finish at the ASUN Championship. He also assisted the team to a top-five placement at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional, which led to their appearance at the 2024 NCAA Championship tournament.
A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Mattiace was a five-year standout for the UNF men’s golf from 2016-21 highlighted by an All-ASUN selection and three Academic All-ASUN selections throughout his tenure in Jacksonville. He went on to play three years of professional golf, mainly in the Dakotas Tour with three wins, 12 top-10 finishes, and 19 top-25 finishes in summer events.
“I’m thrilled to be back at my alma mater, UNF,” said Mattiace. “Professional golf was my dream and I gave it my all for three years. Now, I’m happy to help, teach and guide these students-athletes to one day accomplish their dreams. I’m so grateful that I can work under one of the men that did the same for me.”
Mattiace was a decorated player with the Ospreys on top of his All-ASUN selection as ASUN Co-Freshman of the Year, ASUN All-Freshman and an ASUN Golfer of the Week selection. He added on to his conference all-academic selections as well, landing on the ASUN Academic Honor Roll five times in his collegiate career.
Through his five seasons with UNF, Mattiace was a part of three teams wins, including the ASUN Championship team in 2018, four regional team appearances and two NCAA Championship appearances. His best year came during the shortened COVID-19 season with five top-25 finishes, while his best collegiate placement was during his fifth year placing fourth overall at The Collegiate Invitational hosted by UAB.
