We interrupt our British Open coverage—especially since all signs point to it being over—to bring you a celebrity golf update. Sauce Gardner appeared on his way to breaking a scoring milestone. Until a bit of wildlife got in his way.
The New York Jets star—and our new favorite golfer—started off hot with a pair of pars during Thursday’s round. Pretty impressive for a guy who seems to have just gotten serious about the game in recent weeks.
And things were progressing pretty nicely from there in his quest to break 90 for the first time as Sauce continued to provide scoring updates after making the turn in 42.
Some haterz emerged, however, pointing out that Sauce was playing a par 65 that was measuring less than 5,000 yards (It appears to be Pinch Brook Golf Course in Florham Park, NJ). OK, so not the stoutest of tests, but again, this guy is basically a beginner! Let him have his fun!
But then Sauce ran into a test of a different kind when he encountered this wild animal on the 14th hole:
“I might be done golfing,” Sauce says in the clip. “Yep, let me get up off of this course. Yep, I’m good, I’m good. Chill, chill.” Apparently, Sauce was more scared of the animal than he is of tackling a large tight end.
Sauce later called it a hyena, but many pointed out that it was a coyote. Either way, a tad scary, especially since it could be rabid if it’s roaming the fairways like that during the day. But bailing in the middle of a career round? That’s a tough call.
Better safe than sorry, we guess. And judging by Sauce’s past few weeks, there should be plenty more opportunities to post a number.
