Eagles running back Saquon Barkley figures to receive a number of awards in the coming weeks after leading the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards and one on the first came his way Saturday when the Pro Football Writers of America named him the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards and just the second to win a playoff game after doing so, joining Terrell Davis who won the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos after rushing for 2,008 yards in 1998. Barkley needs 98 yards in the NFC Championship Sunday against the Washington Commanders to break Davis’ record for combined rushing yards in the regular season and postseason.
Barkley, who signed with the Eagles after spending his first six season with the Giants, was also named to the PFWA All-NFL and All-NFC Teams. He was joined on the NFC team by tackle Lane Johnson, guard Landon Dickerson, defensive tackle Jalen Carter and inside linebacker Zack Baun.
Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, the Eagles’ first two picks in the 2024 draft, were named as the PFWA’s cornerbacks on the All Rookie team. They are also finalists for the Associated Press’ Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
Barkley is a finalist for the AP’s MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards while Baun is a finalist for the AP’s Defensive Player of the Year award. The AP awards will be announced during Super Bowl week in New Orleans.
