It’s time to mark your calendars, Rutgers fans.
The Big Ten, which announced its five-year scheduling matrix last fall, revealed the 2025 dates for its teams Wednesday afternoon.
Seeking a third consecutive winning record next fall, Rutgers will open conference play at home against Iowa on Sept. 20 and close out the regular season back in Piscataway to face Penn State on Nov. 29. Overall, Rutgers will face nine bowl-eligible teams next season, including three of the four teams that qualified for the College Football Playoff in 2024. Those nine teams, which includes non-conference foes Ohio and Miami of Ohio, boasted a .732 winning percentage in 2024.
Based on that alone, Rutgers will face a more challenging conference slate than it did this fall when it finished with the Big Ten’s easiest strength of schedule, per ESPN.
The highlights? Rutgers will face Oregon, the reigning Big Ten champion, for the first time. The Scarlet Knights will welcome the Ducks to SHI Stadium on Oct. 18. Rutgers will also take on Washington and Illinois for the second year in a row in addition to its “protected game” against Maryland, which will be played on Nov. 8. Additionally, Rutgers will renew its series with Penn State after a year off.
PLUS: Rutgers sticks with scheduling philosophy for 2025
As for its non-conference schedule, Rutgers will try to remain perfect. Since 2021, Rutgers is 12-0 against non-conference opponents. That includes three wins against power-conference opponents — Boston College, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. The Scarlet Knights will not take on a power-conference opponent outside of the Big Ten next fall, however.
Its three non-conference games against Ohio (Aug. 30), Miami of Ohio (Sept. 6) and Norfolk State (Sept. 13) will all be played at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. It will be the fifth year in a row Rutgers plays an FCS opponent (Norfolk State). The Scarlet Knights have won their previous four matchups against Delaware, Wagner (twice) and Howard by a combined score of 207-30.
Ohio (10-3) and Miami of Ohio (8-5), meanwhile, finished at the top of the conference standings in the Mid-American Conference. Last week, Ohio avenged a regular-season loss to Miami of Ohio to win the MAC championship.
Times are still to be determined. These dates are all Saturday games, but the Big Ten can flex matchups to Friday night based on broadcast availability.
