The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled mightily in the red zone since Russell Wilson took over as quarterback. Despite their 18-16 win against the Baltimore Ravens, they were shut out in the red zone. However, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovksy places the blame for the red zone issues squarely at Wilson’s feet.
“This defense in Pittsburgh can win a Super Bowl, this offense cannot,” Orlovsky said. “Right now, Russell Wilson is the worst red zone quarterback in the NFL. I’ll let that sink in. That’s not an assumption, that’s not an opinion, that’s a fact. His QBR in the red zone is an eight.
In addition, Orlovksy is concerned about Wilson’s sack numbers, which have crept up in recent weeks. He took four sacks in the first half against the Ravens and has been sacked 11 times over the past three weeks. A lot of those sacks were his own doing.
The Steelers must improve in the red zone, including Wilson. However, it has multiple causes: play calls, route spacing, and poor first-down run success.
Wilson must be better in the low red zone to get the Steelers offense into the end zone rather than kicking field goals all game, but it goes beyond him.
