The Dallas Mavericks are officially down to one final roster spot, and fans are speculating about who Dallas could sign to solidify their roster heading into next season.
While someone from their Summer League team could end up taking the final roster spot, it seems more likely that the Mavs scour the free agent marketplace for a backup guard to come off the bench.
It has been rumored for multiple weeks now that the Mavericks are looking to add another guard with their final roster spot, and while the frontrunner looks to be Spencer Dinwiddie, a different player who is a one-time NBA Champion has joined the mix.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks have shown interest in signing Talen Horton-Tucker (subscription required), who played the last two seasons for the Utah Jazz. Horton-Tucker is entering his sixth season, and he spent the first three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers in which he won the NBA Finals in 2020.
Horton-Tucker has been an excellent role player for the Jazz over the last few seasons, and he’d be an excellent pickup for the Mavs as he’d give them another combo guard to come off the bench. Last season for the Jazz, Horton-Tucker averaged 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 33.0 percent from downtown.
Horton-Tucker shot the three the best he ever has last season, and he’d be an intriguing piece for Dallas to add. He is a crafty, big-bodied guard who is a good finisher around the rim and a confident shooter. Horton-Tucker is an underrated scorer off the dribble, and he can get all the way to the rim and finish with a slam or knock down a step-back 3-pointer.
He has been underrated for Utah over the last few years, and he is always a threat to put someone on a poster on any given night. Horton-Tucker is also a solid defender, and although he won’t ever be an elite defensive stopper, he can hold his own.
Horton-Tucker is also only 23 years old, and he’d give the Mavs another young piece to add to their core if he ended up being a good fit in Dallas.
It’s clear that the Mavs have a level of interest in Horton-Tucker, and he’d be a fun pickup.
