Carlos Alcaraz will kick off his Rotterdam campaign when he face the Netherlands’ own Botic van de Zandschulp on Tuesday. First-round action also includes a showdown between Holger Rune and Lorenzo Sonego.
(1) Carlos Alcaraz vs. (WC) Botic van de Zandschulp
Alcaraz will be looking for a measure of revenge when he goes up against Van de Zandschulp in round one of the ABN AMRO Open on Tuesday. They most recently faced each other at the 2024 U.S. Open, where Van de Zandschulp pulled off a shocking 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 second-round upset. Alcaraz still leads the head-to-head series 2-1, having cruised in straight sets at the 2021 Australian Open and on the indoor hard courts of Basel in 2022.
It’s hard to see lightning striking twice in Rotterdam, even where Van de Zandschulp benefits from home-court advantage. The 82nd-ranked Dutchman is a horrendous 3-7 lifetime at this tournament and he is off to a winless start (0-3) in 2025. Alcaraz is far from a polished product on indoor hard courts, but you have to think he will be motivated to win at least one match this week given what happened the last time Van de Zandschulp was on the other side of the net.

Lorenzo Sonego vs. (5) Holger Rune
Rune and Sonego will be squaring off for the third time in their careers on Tuesday. Both of their previous encounters have gone Rune’s way, and both on indoor hard courts–6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4 at the 2021 Metz event and 6-7(1) 6-4, 6-3 one year later in Sofia.

Sonego is coming off a quarterfinal run at the Aussie Open, propelling him to 34th in the rankings. Until that result, however, the Italian had not won multiple main-draw matches at a tournament since capturing the Winston-Salem title last August. Rune also played well in Melbourne, losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in four sets in the fourth round. The 14th-ranked Dane has always excelled indoors, too, so he should once again have the edge over Sonego.
