You might have seen footage of Rory McIlroy utilizing a small green training aid last month on the range at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club and wondered what it was or why he was using this particular device.
To answer a couple of your questions, the tool McIlroy was seen using is called the Connector by Sure Golf, and it’s essentially a foam ball that helps golfers improve their arm structure and feel a proper body connection throughout the swing. In an Instagram video posted by the DP World Tour, he explained that he uses the tool to improve his wrist position in the backswing.
In the clip, McIlroy demonstrated how it helps him keep his upper body connected and his wrist straight as he takes the club to the top. Which is a huge key for him, as he has a tendency to cup his wrist in the backswing.
But the Connector isn’t just great at maintaining wrist position throughout the swing. With this in the bag, your possibilities for improvement are endless. And, it’s easy to use.
Simply place the ball between your forearms with the alignment rods on top and think about squeezing it as you make a few half swings. Be sure the ball doesn’t lose its position between your arms. You should feel your upper body, core and lower body syncing up almost instantly. Then, as you get more comfortable, try to make a bigger swing as you maintain the ball’s position.
If you’re someone that struggles to maintain your arm structure in the backswing, you’ll notice that this handy device helps add some much-needed width to your swing. Or, if you’re like me, and need a little help synchronizing your swing, this is a great tool to get your lower body firing first, with the arms trailing close behind. Maybe you’re working on refining your release pattern like Jason Day. The Connector is a great way to train a low-to-high hand path that will help you hit up on the ball and get your speed out front, translating to more distance off the tee.
