Robert MacIntyre pulled out of Saturday’s third round of the BMW Championship.
MacIntyre, who captured the RBC Canadian Open and Genesis Scottish Open this summer, opened with a 72-71 at Castle Pines, starting Saturday 12 shots back of leader Adam Scott. That deficit moved to 14 after an opening-nine 38.
The Scottsman pulled out before the second nine, citing a lower back issue. MacIntyre was seen grimacing multiple times before his WD.
MacIntyre, 28, entered the week 12th in the FedEx Cup standings. Despite the WD, he’s projected to safely earn a spot in next week’s season-finale Tour Championship. It will be MacIntyre’s first trip to East Lake, as he grabbed a tour card this season thanks to the new DP World Tour pathway for European players.
MacIntyre is in the midst of a career-best campaign, recording six top-10 finishes and rising to 15th in the World Ranking. He is the second player this week to drop out due to a back injury, with Hideki Matsuyama withdrawing on Friday.
