WATCH: Breaking down Xavier Musketeers’ OT loss to No. 20 St. John’s
Xavier let another signature win slip through its grasp Wednesday night in a 79-71 overtime loss to No. 20 St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
The Xavier Musketeers will play in a multi-team event next season.
According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Xavier will participate in the Charleston Classic next season along with Clemson and Georgia. The fourth team for the event has yet to be determined.
A three-day invitational tournament held at TD Arena, the Charleston Classic was founded in 2008. Starting next season, it will shift to a four-team event after previously featuring eight.
In its only previous appearance in the Charleston Classic, Xavier reached the tournament’s title game in 2019 after beating Towson and UConn. Travis Steele’s Musketeers fell to Florida, 70-65, in the finals.
Xavier has little history against the other announced participants in next year’s event. The Musketeers are 1-1 all-time against Clemson, last meeting in the 2016 Tire Pros Invitational (Xavier won, 83-77.) Xavier is 3-2 all-time against Georgia though the Bulldogs ended the Musketeers season in the first round of last season’s NIT.
