Rookie quarterback Drake Maye will make his first NFL start for the Patriots against the Texans on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s NFL draft, will take the reins from veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who started the first five games of the season.

Maye had begun to outplay Brissett by the end of training camp, coach Jerod Mayo said on multiple occasions, but the Patriots’ development plan called for the 22-year-old signal-caller to spend time watching and learning before taking over the offense.

Brissett helped lead the Patriots to a season-opening win against Cincinnati, but both the team and his individual performance have backslid since then. Brissett completed a season-low 52.9 percent of his passes in Sunday’s loss to the Jets for a season-low 4.7 yards per completion. He threw just two touchdown passes in five games.

“It just wasn’t good enough. I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game,” Mayo said of Brissett’s performance against the Dolphins. “Look, as the quarterback, and he understands this, he touches the ball on every single play and we didn’t win the game, or score enough points to win the game. I think he would echo that same sentiment that it wasn’t good enough.

Now the Patriots turn to Maye in hopes of better results. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound rookie from North Carolina showed flashes of arm talent and foot speed during the preseason. He has said throughout the season that he has been preparing as if he is the starter. He was taking around 30 percent of the reps with the first team in practice in recent weeks, according to Mayo.

Maye went 4-for-8 during his first NFL action during the closing minutes of the Patriots’ loss to the Jets in Week 3.
