If you’re judging Spencer Rattler based on his winless record as a rookie, you’re taking the wrong approach.
Yes, winning games is the obvious objective, but it’s important to look beyond the record when evaluating a player. That’s what coaches around the league are doing, and per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, NFL coaches like what they see from the New Orleans Saints rookie.
Rich Eisen asked Pelissero about Kellen Moore’s noncommittal answer on Derek Carr earlier this week. Peliserro began speaking about Carr’s contract before quickly pivoting to the rookie’s performance.
“A ton of coaches watched Saints tape this offseason because they had a head coaching vacancy, and people are studying the roster. I heard a lot of positive things from those coaches about Spencer Rattler,” he said.
They saw “a guy who looks like he could be a potential future starter in the league.” Reports have surfaced that the Saints front office views Rattler the same way.
When you watch Rattler, he put good things on tape. Being thrust into that position, it can be hard to forget he was a fifth-round pick and was always supposed to take time to develop.
It’s one thing to be thrown into a starting position sooner than he should be, but he wasn’t provided with a strong supporting cast due to injuries. In this situation, flashes are the best you could ask for.
Pellissero recounted a conversation he had prior to the Saints’ “Monday Night Football” game versus the Green Bay Packers. He asked a staffer about how Rattler was doing. The coach told him Rattler was “doing good. He has to meet these guys he’s throwing to tonight.”
The Packers game was probably Rattler’s worst supporting cast, but he was in a similar predicament in most of his starting opportunities. Despite the circumstances, coaches liked what they saw. We’ll have to see if Moore feels the same.
