Jockey Frankie Dettori is in the midst of a tax dispute with British authorities.

A decision to allow Dettori to remain anonymous in his proceedings with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the tax authority in the United Kingdom, was overturned Monday according to a report from Jonathan Harding of Racing Post. According to Harding’s report, Dettori claims to have paid the bill in full, but went before a court to request anonymity with respect to the proceedings.

After his anonymity was lifted, Dettori issued a statement. “A few years ago, I employed the services of professional specialist tax advisors to look after mine and my family’s financial affairs.

“A structure was created and I was told that it had been approved by HMRC. Years later HMRC is now challenging that structure. My former advisers have since been dismissed.

“My new advisors and management team are working hard to unravel the mess that I have been put in. They are also working closely with HMRC to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible.”

Dettori had announced plants to retire after the 2023 Breeders’ Cup, but instead began to ride in the United States. He has 79 wins in 444 North American starts in 2024 as of Monday, including top-level wins in the Jenny Wiley (G1) with Beaute Cachee and the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) with Newgate.
