Former trainer Chuck Simon died Sunday at Saratoga Hospital after battling cancer, Thoroughbred Daily News reported. He was 57.

Simon trained from 1999 to 2019. TDN reported that he retired because he found it difficult to compete against the trainers with large stables.

For his career, he had a record of 2,679: 359-360-332 and earnings of $11,211,973.

Simon grew up in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and worked with horses as a teenager, according to the report. He attended the racetrack industry program at the University of Arizona, where he got a bachelor’s degree in animal science.

Trainer Cheri DeVaux worked with Simon in her early 20s and credited him with helping her build a successful career. “I really do owe everything in my life with him,” she told TDN. “He put me on the right path.”
