First Resort, winner of the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club, will miss the rest of the Kentucky Derby prep season because of a stress fracture.
David Grening of Daily Racing Form reported that the Eoin Harty trainee will not need surgery, but he will be out of training for 60 days.
Harty said First Resort could return for a late summer or fall campaign “as long as the X-rays are clean.”
First Resort is Godolphin homebred by Uncle Mo. After winning his debut at Ellis Park, he was second in the Saratoga Special (G2) and then fourth in the Summer (G1) on turf at Woodbine. The Kentucky Jockey Club, where he beat Jonathan’s Way by 2 1/4 lengths, was his most recent start and earned him 10 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.
First Resort was scratched from Saturday’s John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park after Harty noticed he was off in his hind leg after a workout Feb. 17, according to the DRF report.
Harty also trains Poster, who was 3-for-3 last year, including a win in the Remsen (G2), and was third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes in his only start this year.
