Dr. Venkman, most recently fourth as the favorite in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, will turn back to one turn for the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Saturday.
His performance in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship will determine where Dr. Venkman points on Breeders’ Cup weekend. According to a report by Brad Free of Daily Racing Form, trainer Mark Glatt is considering either the Breeders’ Cup Sprint or the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for Dr. Venkman.
A lightly raced 4-year-old Ghostzapper gelding, Dr. Venkman has raced six times, at distances between 6 1/2 furlongs and 1 1/4 miles. His three wins have come in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight, a seven-furlong allowance and the 1 1/16-mile San Diego Handicap, all at Del Mar. His only off-the-board finish to date came in the 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic, where he tracked in range but flattened late for fourth behind Mixto.
