There were very few expectations for the New York (4-12) in Week 17 as they faced the Buffalo Bills (13-3), who were playing to secure the No. 2seed in the AFC Playoff Picture.
New York was playing for nothing outside of their draft position.
From the start, the Jets showed zero interest in playing as the Bills humiliated them from start to finish in a 40-14 loss. Everything that could go wrong wrong, did, and even the Bills backups took advantage of a Jets team that quit.
With that, here is Jets Wire’s report card for Week 17:
Pass Offense: D-
This was easily the worst game Aaron Rodgers played as a Jet and the only silver lining is that it meant absolutely nothing. Rodgers finished 12 for 18 for 112 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. One of his interceptions was tipped at the line of scrimmage on a screen pass intended for Davante Adams.
Tyrod Taylor took over in the fourth quarter and at least showed a spark, even if it was against the Bills backups. Taylor finished 11 for 14 for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Garrett Wilson led the Jets receivers with seven receptions for 66 yards, a touchdown and a fumble on eight targets. Whether he’s happy about that… is another story.
Run Offense: C-
The Jets had no choice but to abandon the run after Buffalo scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 33-0 lead. Breece Hall led the Jets with 10 carries for 45 yards. Isaiah Davis finished with three carries for 35 yards and Braelon Allen had six carries for 26 yards. Much ado about nothing from the ground game in Week 17.
Run Defense: C
It wasn’t a bad game by the run defense as they held James Cook and Josh Allen to a combined 20 carries, 70 yards and two touchdowns. The Allen touchdown could have been avoided if not for three bad defensive penalties on Buffalo’s opening drive that put the Bills on the goal line. Overall, the defense can only do so much against the run if the rest of the team doesn’t show up.
Pass Defense: F
It’s beyond frustrating watching Buffalo receivers wide open with no Jets defender in sight to make a play. The secondary has way too many miscommunications on the field for it to be a coincidence. The Bills even benched it’s starters early in the fourth quarter and the starters still allowed a 69 yard touchdown pass to backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
Sauce Gardner left this game with a hamstring injury, but it really didn’t matter. What was more alarming was coach Jeff Ulbrich trying to talk to Gardner after he was called for pass interference on the Bills opening drive and Gardner turned his back on him. It shows you what the players really think of this coaching staff, which is odd since it’s the same group that was under Robert Saleh.
The pass rush was non-existent with another disappearing act from Hassan Reddick and another week of no sacks on the quarterback.
Coaching: F
One more game until we are rid of this nightmare of a coaching staff. It’s unbelievable that Jeff Ulbrich cannot motivate these players to at least give minimum effort, let alone a max effort. Three defensive penalties on the opening drive that led to a touchdown and five personal foul penalties in the game total. This team has been an undisciplined mess all season, they’ve never been interested in fixing the problem and that falls squarely on the coaching staff.
The Jets play with no passion and no heart. They quit the second they face any type of adversity and never rose to the challenge to play hard for Jeff Ulbrich after Robert Saleh was fired. Jets fans and the beat writers will do what they do best and blame Woody Johnson because it’s convenient. But, Woody doesn’t call the plays from the sidelines or puts on the pads. It’s on the coaching staff to prepare a plan and there was nothing of the sort in Week 17. 4:30 PM on Sunday, January 5 can’t come soon enough.
Special Teams: Incomplete
The Jets didn’t attempt a field goal or an extra point with a returning Greg Zuerlein. Thomas Morstead punted three times with a long of 56 yards.
