Iga Swiatek has struggled to fully get her 2025 season going, having enjoyed fantastic success in 2024.
Swiatek lost to Jelena Ostapenko once more in the Qatar Open semi-finals, and followed that up by losing to Mirra Andreeva in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarter-finals.
Those two ultimately disappointing runs came after Swiatek lost her Australian Open semi-final to Madison Keys.
But there is seemingly light at the end of the tunnel, with Swiatek set to be honoured at Indian Wells after lifting the trophy there in 2024.
The Pole is, however, out of form heading into the WTA 1000 tournament, which gets going in California early next month.
Teenage star Andreeva went on to win the Dubai Tennis Championships after beating Swiatek, with former player Rennae Stubbs analysing their meeting on the latest episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.
“The one thing about Iga when she gets on to those faster courts is that she panics again,” said Stubbs. “She goes back to panicking, not hitting high balls and change of pace.
“There were a couple of shots she came into the net on and everybody knows who listens to me commentate that you do not go in on a cross court forehand.
“When you hit your forehand cross court and go into the net, you are a dead duck. I don’t care how bad a player’s forehand is.

“My backhand was better than my forehand but if I am running to my forehand to hit a passing shot, I’m going to pass you.
“I’m going to hit an angle short, which she [Andreeva] did on one really big point or you can hold the ball a little longer and hit the ball down the line.
“On the backhand you can do it a little bit more because it’s a little bit harder to hit the hard angle off of the backhand, most players will hit their running backhand down the line. But the bottom line is that coming on on the forehand is a disaster.
“The reason Iga does it a lot is because her grip is so extreme that if she has a low ball which is short in the court it is hard for her to go down the line.
“She thinks I can hit it harder hitting in cross court. So she think if I hit it hard cross court I am in better shape.
“But in actual fact you are better off hitting it high with a bit of loop down the line. Because the ability for an opponent to hit a winner off that shot is so much less than the forehand.
“So there were tactical errors which Iga also made on really big points by coming in on the forehand. She got passed cross court one time and she got passed down the line.
“Those are the little things if I was to coach somebody like an Iga Swiatek, I would say you have got all this but you haven’t used all the tools in your tool box.”
Swiatek is currently working under Wim Fissette, with the Belgian having coached a long list of WTA stars.
The Pole was world number one upon hiring Fissette last October, but shortly lost out on top spot to Aryna Sabalenka.
He had only just split with Naomi Osaka when taking on the role, having also previously worked with the likes of fellow former number ones Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber.

Stubbs meanwhile coached fellow Australian Sam Stosur after her playing career, with the former believing the latter was much like Swiatek.
“Sam struggled with that shot,” Stubbs continued. “Sam Stosur had a very extreme grip on her forehand as well, and Sam used to do the same thing.

“We worked on that shot over and over and I must have fed her a thousand little balls to the forehand and made her hit every single one of them down the line.
“She struggled with that shot in her career but after working on it a lot it was a shot that she never missed.
“She knew that reward was there if she went down the line. I think there are little things like that which Iga needs to improve on if she wants to win on a hard court.”
