REDDING, Calif. — GCD Fitness, a local gym known for its inclusive environment and support for individuals with special needs, is set to close its doors by the end of March due to government funding cuts. The gym, which has been a staple in the community for a decade, is funded by Individual Placement Support (IPS), a government-backed initiative aimed at helping those with mental disorders secure and maintain employment.
Michael Smith, a gym assistant, described the gym as more than just a fitness center. “Well, it’s more like home,” said Smith. “It took me off the streets and basically gave me a chance.”
Jennifer McClelland, a fitness instructor at the gym, expressed her concerns about the impending closure. “I have seen a light come on in people from when they’ve joined here,” said McClelland. “Maybe they were disregarded somewhere else, but when they came here, we are all so welcoming.”
The gym has been a haven for many members who have felt unwelcome elsewhere. Shawn Britt, a gym member, shared his experience. “Believe it or not, after being thrown out of other places, you know, because I too was a bit different, so I found this and fell in love with it right away,” said Britt.
Melian Manas, the assistant manager, emphasized the sense of community the gym has fostered. “This isn’t just a gym, it’s a family. We go through things together and we talk to each other,” said Manas.
McClelland is hopeful that local organizations might step in to save the gym. “I’m hoping that in this community, there are many other organizations like non-profits or local churches or anyone with some influence and funds that can take on a project such as this because we lost our funding from the Department of Developmental Services,” said McClelland.
GCD Fitness is now reaching out to the community for support, urging anyone interested in helping to come forward.
