Wisconsin basketball rode an early-game blitz, continued red-hot three-point shooting and strong performances from two key starters to a decisive 76-64 home victory over Indiana on Tuesday.
The Badgers set the tone from the opening tip. The team got off to a 19-2 lead after only 4:20 of game action. That came thanks to a flurry of three-pointers from Nolan Winter, Steven Crowl, John Tonje and Max Klesmit (2). That opening blitz put Indiana on its back foot. It also was a forecast for what was to come, as the Hoosiers would scramble for answers for the remainder of the evening.
Mike Woodson’s team did battle back, trimming Wisconsin’s lead to 40-28 entering halftime. That was about the closest the team would come, however, as Wisconsin left no doubt in the early stages of the second half. Klesmit delivered a collection of big baskets and key defensive plays as the Badgers grew their lead to 19 points with 15:23 remaining in the game. That margin held strong through the rest of the final frame, before Indiana scored six garbage-time points to trim the final margin.
Klesmit led the Badgers effort with 13 points, six assists, three steals, a rebound and a block. Winter delivered 12 points on an efficient five-of-seven shooting, plus helped Wisconsin hold Indiana star center Oumar Ballo to just four points and six rebounds. Wisconsin also yet again got key contributions from its bench: nine points from Kamari McGee, six from Xavier Amos and 10 from a suddenly red-hot Carter Gilmore.
Wisconsin improves to 18-5 and 8-4 in Big Ten play with the victory. Indiana, meanwhile, drops to 14-9 (5-7 Big Ten) with the defeat.
The Badgers importantly continue their flawless stretch of home results with the decisive victory. The program is now 12-1 at home this season, with conference wins by 12 (Indiana), 28 (Nebraska), 2 (Ohio State), 21 (Minnesota) and 31 (Iowa). The result is important, with the team facing an extended stretch of six road tests in eight games. It is 4-2 through the first six of those games (four away, two home), with two more big road games upcoming.
The first of those tests is on Saturday at Iowa, followed by a trip to Purdue on Feb. 15.
