2024 was a thrill for BYU.
The 100th season of Cougar football proved to be one of the most memorable in program history, producing a number of now-iconic moments that will be remembered for decades to come.
Here’s a look back at BYU’s top 10 plays of the 2024 campaign.

Week 9 at UCF
There’s truly never a dull moment with Jake Retzlaff at quarterback.
Retzlaff’s chaotic confidence paid off on BYU’s opening drive in Orlando, as he salvaged a broken third down design to scoot 29 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.
The sequence was a sign of things to come for the Cougars, who ran for a total of 252 yards against UCF to remain undefeated.
Alamo Bowl against Colorado
Could BYU have made Shedeur Sanders’ life any more miserable in the Alamo Bowl?
The Cougars made a number of impressive plays against Colorado, but none represent the night’s result better than this teamwork-fueled turnover.
With the Buffaloes down by 20 points, Sanders fired a pass about 30 yards to the far sideline, only for receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. to be met by a wrecking ball in safety Tanner Wall.
Wall’s perfectly-executed, bone-crushing blast on Horn caused the ball to pop up free for a tumbling Evan Johnson to pluck out of the air for an interception.
Colorado may have had the star power, but BYU had the willpower that night in San Antonio. Coach Prime’s Buffaloes were no match for a fired up, unified Cougars squad, as evidenced by Wall and Johnson’s effort.
Week 2 at SMU
BYU’s defense was unbelievable against SMU, holding the eventual College Football Playoff-bound Mustangs without a touchdown and forcing three red zone turnovers.
One such takeaway came on a freakishly athletic pick from Marque Collins, who jumped the route as the help defender and tiptoed both feet in bounds to thwart a potential go-ahead scoring drive.
Everything about this play — from the toe tap to the simple crossed arms celebration afterward — looked really, really cool. Presentation matters!
Week 2 at SMU
With the game potentially on the line at SMU, the Cougars took a major gamble and were rewarded handsomely for it.
With the game tied at 15 and BYU not yet at midfield on a fourth down and one late, Aaron Roderick dialed up a standard speed option design, with Retzlaff pitching outside to Miles Davis, who then flew 37 yards down the sideline to get into scoring territory and set up the eventual game-winning field goal for BYU.
Though Davis’ wheels were the primary factor here, the unsung hero was Retzlaff. He managed to deliver the toss with a defender just inches away from him, getting pummeled to the ground as soon as the ball left his hand. No guts, no glory.
Week 3 at Wyoming
BYU’s first kick return touchdown in a decade came at a pretty convenient time.
Following a somewhat frustrating first half showing in Wyoming, Keelan Marion opened the game’s final 30 minutes by taking the kickoff 100 yards to the house, pulling the plug on any remaining energy from Cowboys fans and melting all the Cougar tension away.
When I witnessed this return from the press box in Laramie, I thought it would be a shoo-in for BYU’s top special teams moment of the year. How could you possibly top that?
Boy, was I wrong, but more on that later …
Week 4 against Kansas State
To quote the great Michael Scott: “Oh, how the turn tables.”
In just 39 short seconds, BYU swung a 6-3 deficit against Kansas State into a 17-6 advantage at halftime thanks to one of the most magical sequences imaginable.
A Jack Kelly hit led to a fumble, which freshman Tommy Prassas collected off the turf and delivered into the end zone to put the Cougars ahead and send LaVell Edwards Stadium into hysteria.
Along with retaking the lead, Prassas’ defensive score reignited the crowd to strengthen the already palpable home field advantage and ensure that the Wildcats would be buried for good.
On the following series, BYU stole possession back on a Tyler Batty interception before scoring yet again on a Chase Roberts touchdown.
It all happened so fast. My personal condolences to anyone who may have been in the bathroom or waiting in line for concessions and missed those 39 thrilling seconds. Truly brutal.
Week 5 at Baylor
Given how heroic BYU’s defense proved to be at times this past year, it only makes sense that Jay Hill’s unit would find a way to come to the rescue when the Cougars found themselves in danger at Baylor.
With BYU on the verge of suffering what could have been an embarrassing, season-altering collapse, Crew Wakley hovered to an errant Bears pass for the game-clinching interception with 49 seconds remaining.
Wakley may have left the Cougars for Purdue last month, but this pick was a perfect contribution during his time in Provo.
BYU’s win over Baylor ended up aging quite well — the Cougars were the only team to defeat the 8-5 Bears at home all season.
Week 4 against Kansas State
How on earth did Kingston even gain positive yardage here, let alone go 90 yards for a touchdown? He muffed the punt at the 23-yard line and picked it up at the 10, only to go full video game mode for the score — though trying to replicate such a scene on College Football 25 seems impossible.
It was BYU’s first punt return touchdown in more than a decade, and it came with the Cougars’ defensive safe return unit on the field — by far the least likely group to orchestrate such magic.
Kingston received key blocks from Jakob Robinson and Tanner Wall, with Isaiah Glasker leading the way to the end zone to achieve viral status within the college football world and turn LaVell’s house into a madhouse.
In a way, Kingston’s return touchdown is almost a perfect representation of what BYU’s season became. What Sitake’s squad did wasn’t always conventional, and plenty of people had their reasons not to believe, but the Cougars defied the odds in dramatic fashion and produced results that didn’t just appear impressive, but gave you goosebumps as well.
Week 8 against Oklahoma State
Beck to Harline. Mangum to Mathews.
Retzlaff to Lassiter.
BYU couldn’t solve a struggling Oklahoma State squad for the first 59 minutes of their meeting on Oct. 18, but in the final 60 seconds, the magic with which the Cougars had been accustomed to dance with showed up once again, but much stronger than ever before.
I still don’t understand how Darius Lassiter was so open on this play, nor how he strolled into the south end zone with practically zero Cowboy resistance.
Frankly, I’m not sure any of us will ever understand it. That’s what makes it so magical — the kind of experience that turns young fans into diehards for life.
Week 11 at Utah
How could No. 1 be anything else?
An undefeated season on the line. On the road against your hated archrival. No timeouts left and the clock ticking down to its final seconds. A kicker who grew up dreaming to play for the team he would one day be tasked with saving.
It’s almost too Hollywood.
Amid all the drama, Will Ferrin drilled a 44-yard, game-winning field goal to cement his place in Cougar lore forever and author one of the most unexpected chapters in the historic BYU-Utah rivalry.
Much has been said about what occurred both before and after Ferrin’s heroics, but neither can take away the sheer difficulty of making a kick in such circumstances — yet Ferrin did it like he’d made that same kick a thousand times before.
Ice cold.
Plus, how many other Cougars have ever caused such town-wide pandemonium? There are legends, and then there’s Will Ferrin.
