Former India head coach Rahul Dravid made a surprise return to competitive cricket as he played alongside his younger son, Anvay, for Vijaya Cricket Club in their KSCA Division III League match against Young Lions Club on February 22. Dravid, now the head coach of Rajasthan Royals, formed a brief 17-run partnership with Anvay before getting dismissed for 10 by Young Lions bowler AR Ullas.
Having retired from professional cricket in 2012, Dravid’s unexpected appearance on the field left the Young Lions players in awe, even if it was short-lived. Both of Dravid’s sons, Samit and Anvay, actively participate in Karnataka’s age-group cricket, making the moment even more special for the former India captain.
Dravid’s return also evoked memories of 2013 when, just months after retiring, he represented his childhood club, Bangalore United Cricket Club, in the KSCA Second Division League.
Batting first, Vijaya Cricket Club benefited from Anvay Dravid’s crucial knock of 58 off 60 balls, providing much-needed stability to his team. He also cherished the opportunity to share the crease with his father, an experience that will surely remain unforgettable. Dravid, aiming to accelerate the scoring, attempted a lofted shot towards long-off but mistimed it, leading to his dismissal.
Vijaya Cricket Club eventually secured a 24-run victory, earning a spot in the semi-finals. With his brief but memorable return to the field, Dravid will now shift focus back to his coaching responsibilities with Rajasthan Royals as they gear up for IPL 2025.
