The hot topic of discussion in the world of tennis right now is the decision to ban the world number one Jannik Sinner for three months.
After testing positive for a banned substance last year, Sinner has now been given his sanction with a three-month ban not entirely going down well universally across the game.
Several players have expressed concerns regarding the Sinner punishment. Some feel that the punishment doesn’t fit the actual crime with a dangerous precedent perhaps now being set by the powers that be.
Jack Sock thinks the Sinner decision is silly. He’s slammed the decision made on Sinner and believes it’s only been so lenient due to the fact that the Italian is the game’s best player right now.
Sinner will return to tennis for an ATP event in Rome. He has also managed to avoid missing a Grand Slam event and he should retain his number one ranking despite missing three months of action.
The uncle of the legendary figure Rafael Nadal is often keen to throw his thoughts into the mix when it comes to the big tennis stories and this one is no different.
He’s admitted that he’s been left surprised by some of the reactions from the players on the ATP Tour given the furore surrounding the length of the ban.
Nadal told Marca: “I am against the sanction.
“I know Sinner personally and he had no will to commit a crime and you can’t treat a person like that for a mistake produced by chance.
“One has to punish the people who intentionally do things wrong and seek his own benefit. And I know that’s not the case with Sinner.
“So, why do you want to sanction? It’s true that they say that others who are not number one were sanctioned because they did it wrong before.
“I am surprised that different players have positioned themselves against it, even some of the highest level and some who are not very clean themselves.”
Sinner’s three-month ban feels wholly pointless and despite what Nadal’s uncle claims, it’s easy to see why so many are upset with the ruling.
It sets a dangerous precedent and ultimately, these professional sports players are responsible for the treatments they are having and the ointments they are using to help them stay permanently fresh.
Sinner won’t miss a major but he will miss Indian Wells. That might not seem like much but the ATP 1000 event is one of the non-major events that the players do look forward to.
The world number one can’t practice in official tennis venues but can keep in shape at a number of private venues that aren’t connected to a national association.
Sinner’s ban will end prior to the Italian Open which gets underway on May 7th and it will be fascinating to see what sort of form he shows at his home ATP event – and also what sort of reception he might get from the fans!
