Rafael Nadal apparently isn’t winding down his career after the Paris Olympics.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion will play the U.S. Open on a protected ranking. He was listed among the tournament entrants on Tuesday.
Nadal, 38, has won the U.S. Open four times, most recently in 2019. He last played the tournament in 2022.
The U.S. Open runs Aug. 26-Sept. 8.
After skipping Wimbledon to prepare for the Olympics at Roland Garros, Nadal returned to singles action with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on clay over Leo Borg, the 21-year-old son of Swedish great Bjorn Borg, in the first round of the Nordea Open in Bastad on Tuesday.
“For me it has been a huge honor to play against the son of one of the biggest legends in the history of our sport,” Nadal said about his 21-year-old opponent. “I think he played quite well, he has a future in front so I wish him all the very best.”
Nadal won the singles title in southern Sweden as a 19-year-old in 2005 and this week is his first time back since then as he prepares for the Olympic tournament on clay at Roland Garros in Paris.
Nadal was playing his first singles match since he lost in the first round of the French Open to Alexander Zverev. He teamed up with Casper Ruud on Monday to win a first-round doubles match.
Nadal, who has been dealing with hip and abdominal injuries over the past 1 1/2 years, will next face British No. 2 Cameron Norrie.
U.S. Leads All Nations with 25 Players Earning Direct Entry
World No. 1s Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek lead their respective fields in the U.S. Open, followed by reigning US Open champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff, who are both ranked No. 2 in the world. World No. 3s Carlos Alcaraz, who has won the past two Grand Slam men’s singles titles, and Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open champion, round out the top entries.
The United States leads all nations with 25 players (15 women and 10 men) earning direct entry.
The American women are led by No. 2 Gauff, No. 6 Jessica Pegula and No. 9 Danielle Collins, while the American men in the field include Top-15 players Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton.
Americans using special or protected rankings to gain direct entry include Reilly Opelka (No. 33), Shelby Rogers (No. 51) and Lauren Davis (No. 59).
Both the men’s and women’s entries were based on the July 15 rankings. The women’s cutoff was No. 96, while the men’s cutoff was No. 98.
